Treating Nerve Injuries

Nerve injuries or dysfunction can have a dramatic impact on our quality of life. Because nerves control our sensation (feeling) and motor function (movement),nerve damage can cause loss of feeling (numbness or pins and needles), pain, weakness or loss of movement.

Common nerve conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome or ulnar neuritis are caused by nerve compression at various locations along their pathway to the hand. When mild, these conditions can be no more than a nuisance, but as symptoms become more severe or more constant there is a risk that irreversible nerve damage can occur. Early consultation with a hand surgeon is the best way to get a good idea of what treatments may be appropriate for you.

More complex nerve issues such as brachial plexus injuries or reconstruction following serious nerve injury require specialist expertise. Dr Alexander has a special interest in nerve reconstruction surgery and works as part of the dedicated multi-disciplinary Nerve Injury Clinic at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
