AOA Scientific Meeting at sportsmed

November 6, 2018 admin

On Friday 9thof November sportsmed hosted the AOA SA Branch Scientific Meeting. The AOA is the peak professional body for orthopaedic surgeons in Australia and Scientific Meetings are a platform for presentation of the latest orthopaedic research in South Australia. It was a particularly interesting meeting with talks covering a wide range of topics from hip replacement to scaphoid fractures and even the possibility of a link between Alzheimer’s Disease and osteoporosis.

Besides research, the AOA is also integral in coordinating the training of orthopaedic surgeons in Australia. We have a training program that is often used as a benchmark for other countries around the world with a reputation for producing world-class orthopaedic surgeons. At sportsmed we are proud to have an accredited training post and you will often see one of our orthopaedic trainees in the consulting rooms or even assisting at surgery.

Personally I consider training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons to be one of the most important responsibilities of being a surgeon in Australia. I am proud to be one of the Directors of Training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, closely supervising trainees throughout their rotation through Adelaide’s biggest and busiest hospital.
